About us

Our Story

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, our co-founders helped lead the mission known as Operation Cruisers Aid. This collaborative effort demonstrated the incredible power and agility of a coordinated maritime response, proving that a volunteer fleet from across the Caribbean can be underway within hours of a storm’s landfall.

In total, 65 cruising sailboats and vessels from 7 countries, 2 continents, were bridging the critical gap before larger agencies could mobilize—bringing immediate lifesaving relief to communities cut off from traditional aid routes, and reporting back disaster needs assessments and intelligence to government and intergovernmental agencies.

Born From the Storm

Boats Without Borders was not created in theory — it was forged in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. During Operation Cruisers Aid, we witnessed firsthand both the power and the limitations of an improvised maritime response. Cruisers moved instinctively to help, but there was no formal structure, no pre-established coordination system, and no framework to properly integrate with governments or larger relief agencies.

We saw the gap clearly: when roads are impassable, airports closed, and communications down, sailboats are often the only assets capable of reaching isolated coastal communities in the first critical hours. What was missing wasn’t willingness — it was organization.

Boats Without Borders was born to formalize that response. To take what worked, strengthen it, build the systems around it, and ensure that the next time disaster strikes, the fleet is not just willing — but prepared, coordinated, and operational from the first forecast to the final recovery phase.

Who are we?

Boats Without Borders is a decentralized, self-sufficient fleet of volunteer cruising sailboats and motor vessels that deploy in the critical hours and days after a natural disaster—before larger organizations can mobilize.

Born from real-world experience, this grassroots maritime network coordinates with local Caribbean leadership to deliver lifesaving aid, restore communication, and gather public health intelligence to be shared with governments and intergovernmental partners. Our volunteers will be onboarded and receive bespoke training and education opportunities, upskilling the cruising and maritime community to build a reserve of humanitarians at sea.
